Hub and Spokes:
Welcome to the updated focalplane.com site. Think of this page as the center of a wheel - the hub on which everything rotates. Related sites which feed information to the hub are the "spokes".
Spoke 1 is the main link to Focalplane's Flickr account. The four thumbnails shown on this page represent the latest images to be uploaded. Flickr will become the repository for most of focalplane's images. As a by product, it also acts as a critical off-site backup for digital images.
Spoke 2 consists of the Focalplane Blog. This journal contains a wide range of topics not covered by the more specific "spokes" and was the original one-size-fits-all website spun off from the original focalplane in-the-news pages.
Spoke 3a and 3b are contextual spokes - they work together to provide specific content about railroads. Spoke 3a points to the railroad set on Focalplane's Flickr account. Spoke 3b is a railroad specific blog that journals events and observations that have everything to do with trains. It currently moth-balled
Spoke 4 is the most recent addition to the family of websites and this takes us back to photography. Equipment and techniques are the principal subjects covered here. It is currently moth-balled
How it works:
The dynamics behind this page are relatively easy to put together using tools available on the internet.
Most of the images on the focalplane wheel are stored with flickr. The weblogs use Blogger. FeedDigest brings the weblog spokes to the hub. If you want to know more about these services, click on their logos in the right hand column of this page.
This page is also an index for the focalplane travelogues and galleries (listed in the column to the left and currently being upgraded so that all the images will be on flickr). The end result is a website that is much leaner than it was, with fewer files on focalplane.com's server. Because the site is going through a major revision there may be broken bookmarked links to individual photos that were once on the server and now on Flickr. Links to the main pages have not been changed.
